Pediatric Surgery

As a special and popular branch of medicine, pediatric surgery plays an important role in surgical treatment of many diseases today.

The Pediatric Surgery Unit of the Turkiye Hospital has become one of the leading facilities in this area with advanced technical equipment. In the unit, we provide our services by and under supervision of our experienced physicians. Pediatric surgery, which requires a great expertise and sensitivity, is applied in our hospital with a unique success.

Additionally, circumcision operations, which are also given importance in terms of Islamic concerns, are performed in our hospital environment with great care.

Which conditions are treated?
The Pediatric Surgery Department of the Turkiye Hospital carries out a broad range of surgeries, including but not limited to (the list below is given by admission rates):

  • Hypospadias (sunnah of the Prophet, half circumcision)
  • Undescended testes
  • Inguinal herniation, hydrocele
  • Circumcision (under general anesthesia)
  • Cystoscopy (diagnostic and therapeutic)
  • Urinary tract obstruction
  • Vesicoureteral reflux surgery
  • Abdominal cysts and tumors
  • Pediatric genital surgery
  • Surgical operations for correcting various congenital abnormalities of newborns.

Undescended testes
Undescended testis has become an important area of focus in the field of pediatric surgery. Every 3 out of one hundred babies born with undescended testis. This rate goes up to 30 percent for premature babies.

Undescended testis can cause infertility in adulthood, if not treated on time. According to available data, 70 percent of babies who born with bilateral undescended testes and approximately 40-50 of babies who born with unilateral undescended testes experience infertility in the adulthood.

This problem is required to be treated in the early infancy period.  In this scope, parents carry a serious responsibility in identifying undescended testes. After the birth, each baby boy is checked by experts. On the other hand, considering the fact that the condition can be missed depending on localization and the severity of the condition, the parents are required to check the testes of the baby.

Undescended testes can descend spontaneously in one year following the birth. Parents are required to check if the testes have descended.

Testicles, which are referred as "eggs" in the public, have crucial functions which cannot be ignored. Testicles generate the hormones which mediate the growth of male characteristics, and testes are also very important to have child in the future. The two testes should be outside the body for proper operation. Testicles which are not descended properly and remain in the body are referred as undescended testes.

Twenty five percent of those with undescended testes experience inguinal herniation. Also, there is the risk of testicle cancer if the condition is not treated.

This important health issue can be remedied by means of a surgical operation performed in the Pediatric Surgery Unit of the Turkiye Hospital. Undescended testes are descended into scrotum. Thus, future vital risks are eliminated for the child. Undescended testes are required to be descended to the scrotum until 2 years of age.

In our country, this is the most frequently performed surgical procedure for children. Recently, the newborn circumcision is widely recognized and accepted as a standard circumcision amongst families of a higher cultural level and strong social background. As the pediatric surgery team of our hospital, we wanted to inform you, our respected parents, who just had or expect to have baby.

What are the benefits of Neonatal Circumcision?
Several studies have shown that urinary tract infections of infancy are 10 folds less likely in children who underwent neonatal circumcision. Due to aforesaid reasons, urinary tract infections are very rare in children who underwent neonatal circumcision. Circumcision is performed under local anesthesia, and, therefore, preoperative fasting is not required.

As the vascular structure of the circumcision foreskin (preputium) will be just started growing, bleeding can be easily controlled with very little risk of post-operative bleeding. Babies feel pain during neonatal circumcision, and therefore, an anesthetic crème is applied around the penis half an hour before the operation. Also, a local anesthesia is induced with a very thin injector by means of an injection in the area surrounding the penis. Circumcision procedure is not started until the pain is completely blocked.

Even though the effect of the anesthesia ceases after operation, there is no need to continue using painkillers at home.
The post-operative care is very easy. You and your baby can go through these days easily without needing supervision of a health personnel.

How and where neonatal circumcision is performed and how long the procedure will last?
If a contraindication is not identified in the first 24-48 hours of the postnatal period, a specially heated operation table is made ready in the operating theater. The operation can be carried out by means of traditional methods, or by means of special instruments such as Bell or Gomco clamp (sutureless circumcision).

Circumcision procedure lasts about approximately 15-20 minutes.

How the home care should be performed after neonatal circumcision?
Following the neonatal circumcision, you will recognize a transparent dressing around the penis of your baby. This dressing will drop spontaneously as your baby continues to urinate in his diaper. Your only duty will be applying the anti-septic cream when you open diaper. An additional antibiotic agent is not required on a routine basis. You are required to change the diaper as you should on a normal basis. Two days later, your baby will be ready to take a normal bath.

Generally, a post-operative analgesic therapy (painkiller)is not required after circumcision.
